The Spirits of Reading

At the end of the day, we can all enjoy sitting down with a great book, our favourite beverage and some comfort food to unwind. Based on our popular Beer Book Appreciation event from last year, we have expanded the program to include a smorgasbord of interesting reads, spirits and food pairings from local authors and foodies. We'll even go behind the scene to discuss what food and drinks helped to get the creative juices flowing.Participating authors include Kari Fisher, author of the Glass Series, William Cole (a.k.a. Bitter Bill), author of Love Lonely,Rosanna Micelotta Battigelli , author of La Brigantessa (2018 release, Inanna), Ralph Dominelli, author Tomb of Sorrows "A Canadian Lament" and Cupcakes and Kale Blogher and Greens 24/7 author Jessica Nadel.

Your host and moderator for the evening is local food and drink writer Hugh Kruzel. Education does not always happen in a formal setting.  Hugh has learned a lot hunkered over a laptop grinding out strings of words that maybe make sense.  He does it for fun; he does it for profit; he does it because it seems the stories need to be written successfully or not.  He sometimes teaches about the writing process, but most often the truths revealed and shared teach him.  Where will the next paragraph lead?  At 5:30 p.m. Hugh will raise his glass, propose a toast to our local writers and share some poetry with Ralph Dominelli. Once our glasses are charged, at 6:30 p.m. we get into the main course with Rosanna Micelotta Battigelli and Jessica Nadel talking foods and super foods and at 7:30 p.m. you might unwind with coffee and dessert or a relaxing glass of wine, although local romance writers William Cole and Kari Fisher will take you on a thrilling first date and leave you in suspense. Reading Town will be serving up some complimentary nibbles between sessions. Stick around for entertainment by local Hugh Jazz after the event.

Ralph Dominelli was born in Sudbury, ON on July 12, 1964.  In 1984 he moved to Toronto for a brief time, but came back with a lifetime of experiences. Ralph has been writing in one form or another most of his life and is involved in music, art and photography. His passion as a poet and poetry was not realized until 2009, when the majority of Tomb of Sorrows as written over a 6 month period.

Jessica Nadel has a passion for plant-based eating and thinks that in a diet of vibrant, nourishing meals there is also room for a cupcake or two. She and her husband own and operate Beards Bakery & Coffee Bar and Tucos Taco Lounge. She has published two cookbooks that focus on colourful and inspiring vegan recipes, Greens 24/7 and Superfoods 24/7, and writes the blog Cupcakes and Kale.

Rosanna Micelotta Battigelli was born in Italy and immigrated to Canada with her family when she was three. Rosanna is a charter member and Past President of the Sudbury Writers’ Guild. She has received a 2017 Ontario Arts Council Writers’ Reserve Grant for her short story collection: “Pigeon Soup & Other Stories.” Another story called “Learning My Lesson” appears in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Teachers.  Rosanna’s novel La Brigantessa, awarded an Ontario Arts Council Writers’ Works in Progress Grant, will be published by INANNA PUBLICATIONS in 2018.

Kari Fisher is an author, poet and dog groomer who has made Northern Ontario her home. She is a fan of many different types of literature and music, and spends her days shaving dogs or writing while sipping coffee, which she is hopelessly addicted to. Disorganized and clumsy, Kari rarely ever wears matching socks. She encourages her readers to view her characters as she does--after a glass of red wine. "I write big books to make up for the fact that I'm only 4'11."

William Cole was born in Toronto and raised in Northern Ontario, Canada. His wife Diane has been by his side for the past 37 years, which he does believe should propel her directly into sainthood. He's been blessed with an amazing and supportive family. Creativity has always played a role in his journey. He suspects writing novels is a natural extension to his years in the music industry, where he had the pleasure of listening to songs he penned being played on the radio. When not out and about earning a living, writing or biking, he is on the golf course attempting to keep up with his sons Aaron and Lee.
