TD National Reading Summits
TD National Reading Summit III: A Reading Canada, 2012
Reading Summit III in Vancouver, B.C. provided us all with an opportunity to have input to our National Reading Plan and to hear the exciting news about the National Reading Campaign’s public marketing initiative. The bulk of our time was spent in stimulating facilitated discussions with people in Vancouver and around the country.

The TD National Reading Summit
The first National Reading Summit examined reading from an international perspective and looked at the links between reading and engaged citizenship.
Building on the research of seven working groups, the second Summit
will present renowned panelists from Canada and abroad addressing the question of Canadian reading habits.
Questions to be addressed will include:
- What must be done to create a nation of readers?
- What are the best means for reaching out to people and
- encouraging them to read?
- What works and what doesn’t?
- How best can we use the information collected?
A key guiding principle of the three National Reading Summits is the link between readership and democratic access to knowledge and engaged citizenship.
The second National Reading Summit will advance the following objectives:
- The development of a national reading plan for Canada
- The creation of a pan-Canadian movement committed to promoting and improving reading across the country
- The reinforcement of reading habits and abilities of young
people across the country - Improving the ability and access of First Nations people to reading
- Helping new Canadians acquire reading skills to foster their successful integration into Canadian society
- Increasing the use of public libraries and reading clubs
- Encouraging the use of more Canadian publications in educational institutions
- Increasing the sales of books and magazines published in Canada
