Report: Objectives
The TD National Reading Summit is the first step in a three year campaign. The objectives are to bring about substantial change in emphasis and that will take concerted effort over a period of time. Some of the desired outcomes:
• A changed emphasis on the way reading is taught in schools, to develop strong reading habits and skills at an early age.
• More Canadian content in schools
• Development of reading habits as skills among new Canadians, in order to further their integration into Canadian society
• Increased reading levels and access to libraries in First Nations communities
• More use of public libraries
• A national movement of people including parents, professionals (teachers, librarians, publishers, writers) and members of the public who will advocate for reading.
• Increased sales of books, magazines, particularly of Canadian publications
• A National Reading Plan that would address these issues in a coordinated and effective way throughout Canada.
For the first year, the main objective was to begin the conversation, identify local and regional initiatives already in place, and build a coordinated support base across many different constituencies.
