Children's Book Review: Pandemic Survival: It’s Why You’re Alive

Publish November 14, 2013

Pandemic Survival By Ann Love and Jane Drake Illustrated by Bill Slavin 978-1-77049-268-4 Tundra Books August 2013 Ages 8-14 128 pp If you don’t want to get sick, should you bathe in goat’s urine or wash your hands? Should you kiss a mouse or take antibiotics? Award-winning authors, Ann Love and Jane Drake, are sisters in real life, and their family has survived polio, typhoid, scarlet fever, typhus, measles, whooping cough, and the chicken pox. So it’s not surprising that they decided to write a book about all the ways we can get sick. Whether the attack is from bacteria, viruses or protozoan bugs, all the gory details are covered in Pandemic Survival. The book takes a historical perspective, covering the development and spread of disease since Hippocrates first recognized that angry gods did not cause illness. Chock full of information and complete with bizarre superstitions, the tone remains light with the help of Slavin’s comic illustrations and a large dose of delightfully disgusting details about pustules, liquid farts and vomit. Readers are introduced to the medical pioneers whose keen observations changed the way we treat disease, making the book read more like a mystery story than a textbook. Although a bibliography would have been helpful, informative sidebars and a glossary add sufficient depth that extends the target audience to older readers. Pandemic Survival is an interesting, sometimes shocking, look at why we get sick, and will undoubtedly inspire budding young scientists to take up the challenge of finding out exactly “why we’re alive.” Penny Draper copy Penny Draper lives in Victoria, British Columbia. She is the author of the award-winning “Disaster Strikes!” series, historical fiction that places young protagonists at the centre of real Canadian disasters.
