Maybelline regales everyone with exotic adventures of exploring shipwrecks, escaping from sharks and discovering dinosaur bones.  Oddrey is at first hopeful her new classmate will be a kindred spirit, but she soon grows suspicious of the over-the-top stories and questions Maybelline’s truthfulness.  While on a field trip to the zoo, Maybelline tries show off by jumping into an enclosure to help a monkey stuck in a tire.  Spotting trouble, Oddrey immediately puts their differences aside and heroically comes to her rival’s rescue.  When Maybelline later grandstands, Oddrey takes the high road and stays mum about another boastful tall tale. Whamond is a syndicated comic strip artist and his cartooning talents shine in this picture book.  The action scenes at the zoo are told through wordless vignettes and show the offbeat duo scaling a giraffe’s neck, plunging into a hippo’s mud bath, and being chased by warthogs.  Oddrey wields her purple umbrella with Mary Poppins-like pizzazz, using it as a boat, parachute and pole vault. While Maybelline is Miss Bossy Pants at recess, making all the playground rules, young readers will understand at the heart of Oddrey’s quirky nature is a strong leader who supports and encourages her friends to “reach for the sky.”   ludke   Linda Ludke is a librarian at London Public Library.  Her reviews have appeared in Quill and Quire, School Library Journal and CM:  Canadian Review of Materials.  When she’s not reading and writing she also loves searching for vintage treasures.   Creative Commons License This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.
